1 - Eve Arnold - All About Eve - In celebration of her life and work as a pioneering photographer, Art Sensus presents over 100 unique photographs and a new book of the work of American photographer Eve Arnold (1912-2012). Curated by Brigitte Lardinois (editor of ‘Eve Arnold’s People’ and curator of Arnold’s former ‘In Retrospect’ exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery), All About Eve offers a spectrum of incredible works, both vintage and modern, all drawn from Arnold’s personal archive. The only solo exhibition to feature Arnold’s work in the UK this year thus far All About Eve has been selected from a private collection, which also loaned some of the prints for the book. Of the works in the book, almost half have been little exhibited and rarely published, if at all. Conceived as a retrospective, the exhibition highlights the true diversity of Arnold’s oeuvre. Photographs of actress Marilyn Monroe, many from the set of ‘The Misfits’ (her final film before her death), sit beside portraits of other Hollywood and West End legends such as Marlene Dietrich, Somerset Maugham, Arthur Miller, Joan Crawford, Peter O’Toole, Isabella Rossellini and Orson Welles. 2 - Mondrian/Nicholson: In Parallel - This exhibition explores the largely untold relationship between Piet Mondrian and Ben Nicholson during the 1930's. At this time the two artists were leading forces of abstract art in Europe. Their friendship culminated with Mondrian moving to London in 1938, at Nicholson's invitation, where the two worked in neighbouring Hampstead studios at the centre of an international community of avant-garde artists. The exhibition brings together an extraordinary group of major paintings and reliefs to explore the parallel paths Mondrian and Nicholson charted during this exciting decade. This is a unique opportunity to experience some of the greatest works ever produced by these two exceptional artists. Until 20 May. www.courtauld.ac.uk

3 - The Flying Dutchman - Last year’s performances of Wagner’s final opera, Parsifal, were hailed as ‘a staging that is as good as any Wagner seen in London in the last 20 years’ (The Guardian). Now ENO presents his earliest masterpiece, The Flying Dutchman, in a new production by Jonathan Kent, formerly at London’s cutting-edge Almeida Theatre and now a successful opera director in demand from Santa Fe to St Petersburg. Edward Gardner, ENO’s Olivier Award-winning Music Director, conducts his first Wagner opera. American bass James Creswell (Timur in 2009’s Turandot) stars as the legendary ship’s captain fated to sail the seas for ever, with Orla Boylan – a ‘radiant’ (Independent on Sunday) Sieglinde in 2004’s The Valkyrie – as Senta, the girl sent to save him. 4 - Alighiero Boetti - Alighiero E Boetti (1940–1994) was one of the most important and influential Italian artists of the twentieth century. He was a key member of the Arte Povera group of young Italian artists in the late 1960s which was working in radically new ways using simple materials. This will be the first solo show by an Arte Povera artist at Tate Modern. Boetti used industrial materials associated with Turin’s booming economy and later made works using postage stamps, biro pens, and magazine covers. His work engaged with the changing geopolitical situation of his time, much of it made on his travels to places such as Ethiopia and Guatemala and Afghanistan. Between 1971 and 1979 he set up a hotel in Kabul as an art project and created large colourful embroideries, the most famous of these were the Mappa, world maps in which each country features the design of its national flag. Highlights include works never seen in the UK such as the iconic Self-Portrait 1993, a life-size bronze cast of the artist hosing his head with a jet of water. Until 27 May. www.tate.org.uk/modern

5 - Gillian Wearing - Turner Prize-winning British artist Gillian Wearing’s photographs and films explore the public and private lives of ordinary people. Fascinated by how people present themselves in front of the camera in fly-on-the-wall documentaries and reality TV, she explores ideas of personal identity through often masking her subjects and using theatre’s staging techniques. This major exhibition surveys Wearing’s work from Signs that Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say (1992–3) to her latest videoBully (2010). 6 - Valentina Lisitsa - Sensational pianist and YouTube phenomenon Valentina Lisitsa is set to make her Royal Albert Hall debut. With her multi-faceted and expressive playing described as "dazzling", Valentina Lisitsa's vast repertoire, ranging from Bach and Mozart to Shostakovich and Bernstein, has earned her a staggering 30 million hits on YouTube, making her one of the most sought-after classical musicians on the web. Appreciation for Valentina is far from limited to the online world and she consistently garners rave reviews for her live performances, which include collaborations with the Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras. 19 June. www.royalalberthall.com

7 - Designs of the Year 2012 - The Design Museum’s Design Awards, ‘the Oscars of the design world’, showcase the most innovative and progressive designs from around the world, spanning seven categories: Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics, Product and Transport. A high profile judging panel will decide the best entries in each of the seven categories. Until 15 July. www.designmuseum.org

8 - Bauhaus: Art as Life - The biggest Bauhaus exhibition in the UK in over 40 years presents the modern world’s most famous art school. From expressionist beginnings to a pioneering model uniting art and technology the Bauhaus’ utopian vision sought to change society in the aftermath of the First World War. Bauhaus: Art as Life explores the diverse artistic production that made up its turbulent fourteen-year history and delves into the subjects at the heart of the school: art, culture, life, politics and society, and the changing technology of the age. Bauhaus: Art as Life will feature a rich array of painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre and installation. Exemplar works from such Bauhaus Masters as Josef and Anni Albers, Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Hannes Meyer, László Moholy-Nagy, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Gunta Stölzl, will be presented alongside works by lesser-known artist Masters and Bauhaus students. 9 - Lucian Freud Portraits - Lucian Freud (1922 – 2011) was one of the most important and influential artists of his generation. Paintings of people were central to his work and this major exhibition, spanning over seventy years, is the first to focus on his portraiture. Produced in close collaboration with the late Lucian Freud, the exhibition concentrates on particular periods and groups of sitters which illustrate Freud's stylistic development and technical virtuosity. Insightful paintings of the artist's lovers, friends and family, referred to by the artist as the 'people in my life', will demonstrate the psychological drama and unrelenting observational intensity of his work. Featuring over 100 works from museums and private collections throughout the world, some of which have never been seen before, this is an unmissible opportunity to experience the work of one of the world's greatest artists. www.npg.org.uk

10 - Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 - Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 brings together a group of specially commissioned works by contemporary artists, poets, choreographers and composers in response to three of Titian’s paintings – Diana and Actaeon, The Death of Actaeon and Diana and Callisto – all inspired by Ovid’s poem Metamorphoses. British contemporary artists Chris Ofili, Conrad Shawcross and Mark Wallinger will design sets for three new ballets at the Royal Opera House. The National Gallery exhibition will showcase their preparatory studies and trace the development of their designs from inception to completion. Renowned choreographers Wayne McGregor, William Tuckett and Christopher Wheeldon will collaborate with the artists to generate new ballets with original music commissioned from leading British composers. In celebration of this occasion, every member of the ballet’s company – over 100 dancers – will participate in the project. A special performance at the Royal Opera House on the 16 July 2012 will be simultaneously relayed to the public on a large screen in Trafalgar Square.
